What is “measurement”? 1 / 6

Measurement is the assignment, rightly or wrongly, of values from any scale type to act as a proxy for some target (an attribute, process, or other observable) for some purpose. This is the most boring question I’ve ever been asked. I don’t know… and I sometimes wonder whether it makes a difference, if not epistemically, perhaps socially or institutionally, how we answer this. Measurement is the process of coordinating quantitative attributes with units on an interval (or ratio) scale. None of these… and I have big opinions about this.
